Match Report

A new look West Wilts 2nd XI travelled the distance to play Wooton-Under-Edge in their first game of the England Hockey Cup Tier 3 competition. Wilts, lacking with player availability, took only 5 players from their regular league 2nd team and brought on another 6 from the 3s, 4s and Vets to fill the ranks.

Due to travel inconveniences Wilts also only started the game with 10 men. Hard work throughout the first half from all those involved meant by the time the 11th man arrived Wooton had only scored 1 past Wilts. With 11 men on the pitch and the ability to strike at the opposition, Wilts managed to create a chance wish was smashed home by Ben Lemon to level the game 1-1 by half time.

Wilts continued to work hard late into the 2nd half but a couple of overworked (read: strained) muscles limited some player movement and abilities. Added to the fact Wilts had a meagre 11-man squad, while Wooton had 14, meant that by the close of the game Wilts lack of energy started to show. Wooton were able to make the most of this by scoring one well worked goal, then another as Wilts pushed for their equaliser. The final score was 3-1 to Wooton, but Wilts did have chances to put the ball in the Wooton net.

All in all a fun day was had by all. Wilts worked hard for one another, never gave up, and gave Wooton a tough game. Good luck to Wooton in the next leg of the competition. Wilts can now focus on the league promotion they’re chasing.
