Match Report

West Wilts hosted Bristol UWE A this week, looking to improve on the draw from the previous week.

The first half started well with Wilts having most of the possession and early opportunities. Wilts managed to create a fair number of chances but a combination of poor accuracy and good goal keeping prevented them scoring. At times UWE were able to get a foothold in the game and created a chance or two for themselves, but just like at the other end, they were unable to convert them. The half time score line was 0-0.

Wilts changed the tactics a little for the second half and this had an immediate impact. James Baker was able to convert a short corner with good help from Joe Veacock, who had a good game in midfield. Wilts showed a great attitude to the game and increased the intensity all over the park in the second half, effectively pinning UWE in their own half. Some more stalwart defending by the opposition helped keep the score line low. Hugh Newmarch took things into his own hands when he picked up the ball on the half way line, wobbled his way past 3 or 4 of their defenders and buried the ball past the keeper from the top of the ‘D’.

UWE didn’t roll over though, they kept fighting to the end. Credit to ‘Man of the Match’ Chris Warren who was instrumental in the Wilts clean sheet. He was able to douse any UWE attack that came his way. A superb ‘centre back’ performance.

Wilts were pleased to play better than last week and keep a clean sheet. The cobwebs are on their way out, but there’s still a fair way to go before Wilts are back to their best. Onwards and upwards next week, away to City of Bath C.
