Match Report

West Wilts 2nd XI faced a strong opposition this week, in the form of Marlborough A, their neighbour at the top of the table. Wilts were looking to continue their fine run with another win against the other teams in the top 4.

The game started well, really well. Within 13 seconds of Marlborough’s’ push back Callum Wolff had intercepted a pass, beat his man and crossed past the keeper to James Baker for an easy tap in. 12 seconds in, 1-0 up! This continued for Wilts, with some more great hassling from the home team. The oppo couldn’t quite cope with all the pressure and Wolff managed to net a sweetly struck reverse from the top of the D. Next up, Joe Veacock turned provider for Mark Brothers to finish with a graceful dive / slide at the back post.

Great interplay between the Wilts defence and midfield meant they were able to keep the ball well and keep Marlborough at bay. Notable mentions to Ali Higginson in the centre and Hugh Newmarch on the wing. All this effort payed dividends with Wilts entering half time 3-0 up.

The second half started in a similar manner, although not another goal immediately. Wilts continued to play the hockey they’ve been practising all season to move the defending opposition around the pitch and then attack. It worked wonders for most of the half. Wolff netted again for his brace, Veacock flicked into the top corner and Baker ended his Man of the Match (and DoD) performance with another two for his hattrick.

Unfortunately, a mishap at the back, although comical, allowed Marlborough to pounce and get a consolation goal. The game ended 7-1 to the home team. A resounding victory to stamp their authority on the division. One more game before Christmas sees Wilts travelling to Marlborough to play their B team. Wilts will be hoping for an even greater goal difference!
