Match Report | West Wilts 2nd XI played at home this weekend, hosting promotion rivals Corsham. Coming off the back of a big win the previous week Wilts were confident, even with a decidedly altered squad. The game began well for Corsham with them having most of the possession and pitch control. Some valiant midfield and defending work from youngsters, Jacob and JP, kept Corsham at bay. Wilts adjusted to their own changed midfield within 15 minutes and got on the front foot. Great forward play by Rob Heyes resulted in Wilts short corners. One was slapped home by Nick Lemon, and another was tapped in past the keeper by Ant Crosbie. The only two goals in the game came in very quick succession. The second half started in a similar vein to the first, with Corsham sitting on top. Wilts reacted to this and adjusted their tactics to keep their clean sheet intact. Another mention for Man of the Match Jacob for his limitless energy and enthusiasm in the centre of the park to once again hold Corsham at bay. The control of the game ebbed and flowed throughout the second half with Corsham not creating meaningful penetrations into the Wilts ‘D’ and Wilts not converting their chances. All in all, Wilts remain at the top of the table after grinding out a hard-fought win over a decent Corsham side. At times the style of hockey was frustrating, but it’s good to know Wilts can get a win even when it’s not ‘pretty’. Next week Wilts will look to protect their top spot as they play another promotion rival, that’s 3 in 3 weeks! |
