Match Report

West Wilts 2nd XI travelled a short way down the M4 to visit the Bristol UWE campus with high hopes to get more points on the board for the season.

The game started relatively frantically while the umpires tried to get a grip on the fast and physical game that was presented to them. Within a few minutes though, a dubious cross (potentially dangerous) was deemed ‘good’ by the umpires and converted with flair by Hugh Newmarch to start the ball rolling. Both teams struggled to find their rhythm for the rest of the first half so the game was relatively frantic and disjointed.

Half time gave Wilts a chance to review their game plan and set out targets for the second half.

It worked. Wilts looked like a team with clear objectives and the knowledge and skill to achieve them. For the rest of the game Wilts were able to keep UWE camped in their own half with little sight of the ball, and no sight of the Wilts goal. James Baker popped up and received a great through ball from midfield dynamo, Cameron Jessop, and hit cleanly to the backboard making the score 2-0. Shortly after this Jessop found Baker once again who netter with a tight angle ‘tomahawk’ to make it 3-0.

The final goal for Wilts came through great link from players who had found new roles in the squad. Joe Veacock, playing any CDM, found a pass forward. It was left by Ben Lemon out wide and picked up on the baseline by Baker. A simple cross to Newmarch for a tap in and the score was 4-0.

Wilts showed maturity above their years in this game to come out with a convincing victory. Special mention to MoM Luke Brown for blistering runs on the wing, and JP McCormack for his stalwart defending (tied MoM until he lost rock, paper, scissors).
