Match Report

Wilts hosted Cirencester A this week in their first league match of the season. Wilts had prepared well with their pre-season friendlies and tournaments so confidence was high before the game.

This confidence showed as Wilts started quickly out of the blocks, winning a short corner within the first few minutes of the game and converting it to take the lead. Wilts continued to apply pressure to the opposition with some great midfield play by man of the match, Nathan Ellis, and his cohorts. Unfortunately Cirencester were able to counter attack and win a short corner that they put in the back of the net to level the score. Within 5 minutes Cirencester had won another short corner and put that it too.

Not to fear though, the Wilts defence adjusted tactically to the challenges coming at them and surmounted them for the rest of the game. Cirencester barely had a sniff at goal after this.

Before the first half was up Ant Crosbie and Martin Allsop did a great job supply the midfield with possession to create opportunities to score. Jamie Grey worked hard off the ball to create the space for his strike partner, James Baker to seize. By the end of the half the score was 3-2 to Wilts.

The second half was still an exciting affair with Wilts probing the oppo for chances to score. Wilts peppered the keeper at times, who had a great game and made some stunning saves. An injury towards the end of the game resulted in Wilts changing up their tactics once again to defend the lead until the end.

The game ended 3-2 to Wilts who take it as a sign of things to come. A little more time training and playing together and with the addition of a couple of key missing players to the ranks will improve the overall performance even more. Tough decisions to be made by the captain moving forward as everyone is making a case for their own inclusion in the squad; a fantastic position to be in.
